My first stop as a Graphic Designer and Marketer was at Staff Development for Educators. In my role there as Creative Supervisor I was in charge of developing and designing SDE's Seminar product line.

SDE's business is primarily in direct mail, accounting for roughly 70% of their incoming revenue from all their teacher training programs. In a calendar year we would mail roughly 20 million pieces of direct mail to the US and Canada.

My challenge as the primary designer for SDE was to create a format that was first a foremost easy to read and communicated the various benefits associated with each unique seminar topic and presenter. The other challenge was making sure the format was efficient for my design team. With so many brochures to design and proof each season it was critical for us not to have any wasted time in developing custom elements, or at least limiting having to do so as much as possible.

The format that I developed for SDE over 3 years ago is still in use to this day. Which tells me that it still must be working for them. There have been countless tests of formats and design and none of them have been able to beat the control that I developed for them years ago.
